Postdoctoral Research Associate, Grid-interactive Controls Group, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

I design and build the digital tools that connect buildings, grids and the people inside them. I draw the system diagrams, write the software, and design the interfaces that make building data usable.

Research

Three themes, one aim: buildings whose data, controls and interfaces work together.

Interoperable digital twinThree sources, a BIM model in IFC, an energy model with thermal zones and occupant behavior in obXML, and building automation points over BACnet or Modbus, each map into one ontology graph built with Brick and SHACL, where Building has part Zone, Zone has part Space, an AHU feeds the Zone and has a sensor point, and an Occupant occupies the Space.ONTOLOGY GRAPH · BRICK + SHACLhasParthasPartfeedshasPointoccupiesspaceszonespointsBuildingZoneSpaceAHUSensorOccupantZ1Z2Z3BIMIFC modelEnergy modelEnergyPlus · obXMLAutomationBACnet · Modbus

Interoperable Digital Twins

One building description that holds across design, simulation and operation. My Ph.D. framework connects BIM, building energy models, building automation and occupant behavior through IFC, Brick, SHACL and obXML.

Building, controller and gridA layered system. Top, the grid sends price and carbon signals. Middle, a supervisory controller combines model predictive control, VOLTTRON and a Brick model. Bottom, a small commercial building receives setpoints and returns telemetry over BACnet and Modbus.GRIDCONTROLBUILDINGprice, carbon signalSupervisory controllerMPCVOLTTRONBrick modelRTUmetersetpointstelemetryBACnet · Modbussmall or medium commercial building

Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings

Open-source building energy management for small and medium-sized commercial buildings, which are 94% of U.S. commercial buildings and nearly half of commercial building energy use. At ORNL I am a contributor and developer on DOE Building Technologies Office projects that combine model predictive control, VOLTTRON, Brick models, BACnet and Modbus.

Occupant, room and sensorsA cutaway axonometric room with a desk, a window and an occupant. An air quality sensor for CO2 and temperature sits on the left wall, an occupancy sensor watches a zone around the occupant, and a contact sensor sits on the window. Human-Building Interaction

How occupants, operators and intelligent building systems inform each other. My monitoring work links BIM, IoT sensors and building automation to track indoor air quality and occupant behavior, tested in university laboratory and meeting-room pilots.

Software

The software I write for my research: what each tool does, the languages it uses, and its code.

  • ORBIT

ORNL Building Interactive Toolkit · TypeScript

Open-source, scalable software platform for building energy management in small and medium-sized commercial buildings.

    [repo]

  • gb-obXML Converter

    XSLT · MIT License

Translates gbXML to obXML so that occupant behavior models can enter BIM-to-BEM simulation workflows.

    [repo]

  • Comfit

    JavaScript · MIT License

Prototype digital twin dashboard that visualizes IoT sensor data on a BIM model in real time.

Design

Design is part of how I do research: I design the interfaces and visualizations of the tools I build, and I bring computational and architectural design into building technology.

4.1

Design for building technology

Interfaces and visualizations for my own tools: the generalizable web user interface for deploying building energy management systems (ORNL/TM-2026/4715), and the Comfit digital twin dashboard, which shows IoT sensor data on a BIM model in real time.

Computational and generative design

Parametric modeling in Grasshopper, and a generative-design study at Autodesk that coupled design generation with natural ventilation simulation in EnergyPlus. The study resulted in two U.S. patent applications and a SimBuild 2024 paper.
